Hello crew! I’d like to start up a thread about your favourite personal audio equipment and how you maintain it. It could have the following forks in its thread: (a) headphone modifications; (b) troubleshooting loudspeaker [transducers?] issues; (c) analogue audio; (d) digital audio. I understand headfi.org has threads like this… and I do indeed frequent them (you can search for me using my handle, ScubaMan2017 ). Obviously, there will not be any commercial ads on the mrcarlsonslab dot com forum-thread. Is there an interest among my peers?

Sounds interesting. You may find a different prospective here, than you get from Head-Fi.

It can get a bit hairy on that site. I learned to use IGNORE on several users. 😑

- Your favourite headphone modification?
- Your (recent) vexing loudspeaker (or microphone) issue?
- Preferred analogue audio source? Brand?
- Preferred digital audio source? Brand?

I’ll start (and you [plural] can respond to each question)…
Answer #1: my favourite headphone modification were earpad replacement. I took an elderly pair of Senheisser HD5??, removed the ratty pads, and replaced them with smooth cups. It changed their listening quality!

Answer #2: tracking background hum and electromagnetic interference in this bloody rental house. Bzzzt. ClickClickClick. Temporarary issue, but I’ve ended up packing up my tube amps and sticking with my solid-state kit.

Answer #3: I’m going to be a pain and say my Grundig Satellit multi-band radio. When the SHTF and we have a power outage here on the North Bruce Peninsula, that FM-stereo is mighty appreciated.

Answer #4 (of 4): I enjoy my ChromeOS, being fed FLAC-encoded music files, burned from PERSONALLY OWNED discs that I buy from rummage sales (…sorry, need to get that in so that I don’t get accused of data theft). That gets fed into a Schiit Audio Bifrost DAC.

@scuba-man-1970 : The way “I see it” and on par with what “Brian Wood” has underlined (and I agree). Unlike HeadFi.org this site is not “purely” audiophile-oriented. The site’s main objective (as imagined by MCL) is to gather a community of nice and civil people who are mainly into learning electronics (of all sorts), more into hands-on building stuff, learning old and new troubleshooting techniques, and sharing knowledge and new projects and ideas (again) about troubleshooting stuff. and also building projects that are offered to us @The patreons@ on MCL’s Patreon Channel (especially testing equipment (that again, is mainly used for troubleshooting) and showcasing your results here, asking how-to questions, supporting each other, and learning from each other’s mistakes. In other words a community of learners, hands-on builders, and troubleshooters.
@scuba-man-1970 I’m sorry, I myself have little interest in these topics, I’m more into learning electronics and wanting to create circuits.

I agree with the others, this is designed as a technical forum and aimed directly at those used for electronics repair and trouble shooting.
Also, is there any reason you had to use 7 replies to make what could have been done in 1 post?
Or are you just here to garner the highest posts count (that’s another trend used on headfi.org in an attempt to be seen as the most prestigious member)?
@moefuzz Hello moefuzz. Link to your reply. Multiple replies. That’s just how my brain works. A bit scattered. Moving forward, I can append the original post with stuff that comes to mind.
I understand your concern: this forum is indeed meant to focus on repair and troubleshooting. The behaviour that you refer to does indeed happen on headfi… mind you… such sycophantic behaviour gets tiresome and the dudes doing it tend to wander away.
My posts on this forum — in no way am I trying to be a grand-stander (god knows I saw enough of that when I was a high school science teacher [thanks for paying your taxes, btw… I’m honestly grateful for my pension]). I enjoy puttering around my workbench. I‘ll use your feedback and be more mindful (and economical) of my posts.
May 28th… I regret not responding sooner — Cool?

@brian-wood …that’s fair. I appreciated your candor @brian-wood .

@ovi4 …again, I appreciated your candor @ovi4 . I wanted to see the level of interest of my proposed topic. I still have many questions about electronics repair… and puttering in general.
If my responses on this forum get too off-topic, send a discreet PM to our moderator. I believe in being held accountable to my online posts. Cool?
