Project: Great 1950's MONO homemade 6550/BO-14 audio amplifier

Just wanted to share a future project. I acquired this last summer from the relative of the builder who had passed away. I had the pleasure of speaking with this gentleman several years ago and he told me about his interest in building Audio and HAM equipment. He was an engineer who lived in Europe for many years in the post WWII era where he worked on building RADAR systems. A very interesting man. This was his personal amp that he built in the 50’s from a design published in the Nov. 1955 issue of “Radio and Television News”. I look forward to getting into it sometime in the future. According to the magazine, this was a design to use the newer 6550 output tubes and used the, what seems to be very rare and desirable, Chicago Transformer BO-14 output transformer. Unfortunately he only built one and it would be difficult to find the parts to make a pair for stereo. I have included a couple pictures and would appreciate any comments.

Looks gorgeous – and those are some beefy transformers.

Might be an excuse to do a couple self-winds if you cant find a second set for a stereo pair.

Loving the finish on the chassis -what is that called?

thanks for sharing! 🙂

How are those cap’s?
It always make me wonder, and have a lot of old stuff that I need to fix and even had a cap explode on an old military scope some time back and never forget it, as it was oil filled and the oil went everywhere.

No I have not fixed it, but maybe someday.

Thank you for sharing and I wish I still own the ones I sold years ago.

@larry_n7luf Thanks for the interest. I can’t imagine that any of the caps are trustworthy. I plan to do a complete restoration of this at some point. The builder did an upgrade?/addition to the original design so I will have to figure it out. Will be a fun restoration to get it looking and sounding as it did when built. I don’t think this has been plugged in for decades- The power cord is shot

@wholetone Thanks for the interest. I didn’t weigh it but I’m pretty sure its at least 60 pounds. I think people refer to it as wrinkle or Crinkle finish

Would love to see that one through the process of a rebuild, or rather – hear – no, both!

😀

It all looks so good. Just cleaning, re-capping maybe. Nice!

Kenneth Olson wrote an article on this 100 watt amplifier when Chicago came out with the might BO-14 opt.

I have one of these amps, it’s really nice.
