NTE is gone, now what?

In case you haven’t heard, NTE is no longer! I find this highly disappointing as they supplied me resistors for radios and what not. Good quality, reliable, in spec components that were easy to order and relatively decent priced. Last time I ordered resistors for a project on Mouser it was a disaster because they were all various series and sizes (granted this was early on so the approach would be different now). The NTE parts I could use the common numbering system and order everything without messing anything up.

Now I will have to find another way, so what is everyone doing for resistors that are good quality and reliable? It blows my mind that electronics are bigger than ever before yet it seems like manufacturers and retailers are drying up compared to how it used to be.

Oh, that’s very bad news… I’ve also bought NTE components many times. Currently, I buy better quality electrolytic capacitors like Vishay in Mauser.

Shopping on Ebay is a lottery, in most cases these are Chinese fakes.

@audiotone I agree, I don’t buy components on ebay unless it was a hard to find part (with caution). I have gotten many radios and equipment with good luck like my HP frequency counter (flipped the reference switch from external to internal), HP 8657A generator (works perfect), and HP 3585A (local oscillator error, after pulling a few boards several times in the diagnosis, it fixed itself, my guess was a coax connection issue).

Seeing news like that really make me wish I could save these companies and run them so we can keep the hobby alive. Of course I am in no position to do anything about it but watch. The modern times I guess.

In the UK where I live it’s hard to buy something interesting to repair. Prices are astronomical and even broken devices are expensive.

Generally, I repair cassette recorders, but sometimes something else comes up for service 😉

It will be difficult to repair something without good quality components.

@audiotone Yes, those items were much lower priced than normal. I try to keep my eyes open for items in good condition that are low priced (a repair special), sometimes they show up. In those cases, no major work was needed to get them going.

I liked NTE because they were always good parts and easy to order. Now it will take a little more work to track them down. I did look the other day on Mouser and saw a resistor series that sounded like the NTE parts according to the data sheet. If they match up and prove to be good, I can share them here.

I have only 1 place local to get parts and it is limited, when I need good parts I still have to go online to get them. Prices have really gone up on tubes lately too. It would be great if tubes were made in America again, Russian tubes are a hit and miss on the quality.

You are right, currently produced electronic parts are a lottery when it comes to quality. I often use parts from dismantled old equipment.
