I built a Ultra Probe and it works great. Maybe a little too great. I’ve used the probe to help solve some radio problems, my issue is that the probe will receive a very strong local radio station and interfere with my testing. It is rather confusing at times. If I turn down the gain then I can lose the signal I’m interested in. Any suggestions as to what can be done? Thanks Mike
I am no expert but maybe some shielding around your work area would help but as far as modification to the probe I would ask Mr. Carlson.

FWIW this sounds like a filter/trap that’s resonant to the frequency of the local radio station will notch or null it out should be a good starting point. There is also a possibility that it’s at a harmonic of the station’s frequency so that would need to be considered. Have a Google on the subject of Notch FM 88~108MHz (i assume the station is in the FM band).
Sorry for not getting back, but had an illness. Anyway, The radio signal is on AM. The interfering transmitter is rather close and a 50KW station. What I have done is cut the nub on the probe, the part that sticks out very short, but that also makes picking up my wanted signal harder. I moved to the basement where reception is a little worse. I’m thinking that there is not much more I can do. It is just a little annoying when tracing a signal and all of a sudden this other signal is picked up through the air. Thanks for the help. Mike
That’s a pity. At this stage my Ultra Probe & the Amplifier all sits in a box as a pile of new parts waiting for its turn to be assembled meaning i need a good chunk of time! I am not that far from the transmitter mast of a group of AM stations. Also my location has in recent years been populated by 1000s of new homes (from what was open farmland 30 yrs ago) plus a new Power Substation which means the entire Medium Band is nothing but Hash on AM. I’m now wondering if my Ultra Probe is going to be swamped as well!
