Hello old tech entusiasts
I’ve been trying to use a VIC Model 8551 mini CRT TV as a second monitor for my PC using an HDMI-to-AV (composite) converter. I got it working successfully for a few hours using CRU to create a 720×576i @ 50Hz interlaced resolution. The CRT synced up perfectly during that time. However, while it was still powered on and working, the sync randomly dropped and the image never came back. I swapped out the HDMI-to-AV adapter for a new one, tried multiple cables, and re-applied working CRU settings (even tried fallback resolutions like 720×480i and 640×480i), but no full sync since. The CRT shows static or partial sync (sometimes a split or rolled image), but never locks in again. Even my PS2 no longer displays on it. I’m wondering if the CRT’s sync circuitry has failed, or if both adapters are just too unreliable. Would appreciate any input from folks with CRT experience or AV converter knowledge.
Welcome, while I am not familiar with that model specifically, I would agree that it sounds like an internal TV problem. Especially since you said the PS2 stopped working as well, that rules out the converter and possible compatibility issues. If it can’t function as it would have originally, you know it is an internal issue. How knowledgeable are you in doing repairs or diagnosing of that nature?
