Project Box / Metal Fab question and Project related questions

I am a new forum suscriber and am about to start building the UltraProbe and Demod removed link As a result, I have a couple of questions:

1) How do you cut out a hole large enough in a Metal Project box (Hammond 1590D or equivalent) that is sized for a 3-4″ speaker? Clearly, this is so large that it won’t be easy to drill safely or cleanly on a drill press.

2) Also, are we allowed to ask questions related to the UltraProbe and Demod/Amp construction (and MrCarlson projects, in general) in this forum? I don’t want to violate any rules so I want to make sure before I ask.

Hi, to give you a better understanding of how things work around here I suggest that you flick thru some of the project related sections one or two of which deals with the ultraprobe as well. It will take you some time. But for specific questions that go deep into schematic matters or layout etc. you better ask within the Patreon comments section of that video/videos and hopefully someone will answer at some point but chances are someone definitely will. As for how to cut holes so big the best easiest option is to buy a so called “metal cutting hole saw” of your desired size (or near enough) the cutout is really not critical and it will highly depend on the speaker diameter of your choice. Here are some examples of how “hole saws” look like in case you don’t know: 

PS: please note that usually if you buy an individual separate hole saw of your choice you need to buy the “arbor” (the center bit that has a drill bit in it) at a separate price. However if you choose to buy a set of various sizes hole-saws they will then include an “arbor” in the set as well. But again, it all depends where you are buying it from.

My preferred method of making an accurate hole of any shape in an enclosure is as follows. Cover the area you want the hole in masking tape. Accurately mark the edge of the area you want to remove. For a round hole this is best done with a compass. Centre punch into the chassis at the right point to provide a centre mark for the compass point. The next thing I do is cut along the line with a scalpel and remove the tape covering the part I want to remove. I now therefore only have tape accurately covering and protecting the material I don’t want to remove. Next, go to a drill press if you have one, or a hand drill if you don’t and drill a row of small holes (say 3mm or 1/8″) that are very close to each other around the edge of your hole inside the tape. Once done, get some old flush cutters and nibble through the bits between the holes. You should end up with a hole that has rough edges much like a torn postage stamp. Neatly file back to the edge of the masking tape (with a flat and half round file for your application here) and you’ll have a perfect hole.

For something like this I would be tempted to drill a bunch of small holes rather than having to cover a large hole with a grill.

Let me know if there is an issue discussing these projects. I don’t want to be part of a community that aggressively markets products towards me or arbitrarily controls speech. There is enough of that going on in Canada.

The majority of the posts I’ve read on this site has people walking on eggshells because of these products. Clearly this is a flawed and fragmented way to try and monetize a youtube channel. The irony of trying to protect a schematic on an electronics forum is not lost, I’m starting to see why it is so quiet here.

@radio-hack Patreon content is MCL protected information, this always has remained NON-public information and will continue to be. Therefore, being a public forum, specific details about the circuit design and other details are not shared here. This has no relation to politics or whatever else it may be called. I imagine if you spent the same amount of time learning and designing circuits, you would want to protect your work as well. At the end of the day, those projects and all the videos fund the future content. We all want this to grow and continue, I wouldn’t know half of what I know today (design and diagnostics) without him so I always look forward to what is next. Now I pass it on to others when I am able.

Additionally, there are very few active members that contribute currently. Most users joined but have not posted anything, that is perfectly fine. The whole purpose here is a place to learn, ask questions and get answers, and share projects or methods of doing things. Of course, this is also a new growing community and things are still getting improved.
