If i get a Heathkit IT-12 signal tracer – do i still need the Ultra probe ?

Hello

I’m new here and i’m certainly not an electronics specialist.

I’m just thinking about buying a Heathkit IT-12 and i’m wondering, in case the demodulator head is included, if this thing isn’t doing the same job as the Ultra Probe ?

Should i save the money and build the probe instead ?

The IT-12 is a cool piece of equipment, though – and i’ve some more Heathkit stuff sitting on the shelf already.

I would say build for the fun and you know what you have.
If you have a problem, you will how to fix it.

That is just me.

The ultra probe would win the sensitivity contest and be more reliable. Not saying Heathkit is not reliable but being rather old by this time, it would need some attention to make sure everything is good to go. Additionally, if you want the best of both (to my understanding) the probe can be used with the Heathkit to improve its performance. All just depends what you want to do and your abilities.

Radios + Tubes + Scopes + Cars= Nothing better!

Thanks for your opinions.

I did get the Heathkit now. Will take a while to get to the restoration and when this IT-12 is fixed, i’ll try it out and then build the ultra probe for comparision. That’s the plan at least.

Have some cars to fix first.
