While I am new to electronics, I have a basic understanding, and can read a schematic … so I am embarking on repairing a 50’s radio/ photograph Zenith. I plan on posting my progress here.
I am happy to hear any advice you folks may have.
I have all the schematics as well as a variAC and made a dim-bulb tester.
It powers on, but does not pickup any stations, hums, and the phonograph does not turn anymore. It hasn’t been touched much since the 50’s, so I plan on starting with replacing the 3 filter caps.
Thanks!
Welcome, here’s my take. Take pictures as you go through it, something always seems to come up that you need to go back and see how it was originally. Rubber components always fall apart on this old equipment so that’s likely your phonograph problem. Check out the motor drive wheel, it’s probably no longer there. For the radio, was an antenna connected? This makes a big difference on determining function. Also if it was on the dim bulb or reduced voltage, it will drastically reduce performance. Go slow, take your time, and have fun with it.
Radios + Tubes + Scopes + Cars= Nothing better!
The phono turntable could be seized due to old, sticky lubricant grease. Check the motor for continuity and the AC supply from the radio. If those are good, a thorough cleaning and lube of the mechanism is in order.
