1960s pin-speaker transistor radio speaker design

A low-power speaker for battery radios did not use a transformer and a voice coil but an armature between two electromagnets and a pin connecting to the paper cone.  Great for highs, mediocre for lows.  BUT a design for a new approach to driving a speaker.   Would Mr. Carlson explore this and introduce the principle to us?
