[Solved] Calibrate a Printer

I have a Brother model HL-L2340DW that I bought in 2017 to make PCB, but I never plugged it until today.

I have done like Mr Carlson and set to actual size and printed out the ultra probe v1 the transfer and it was smaller than it should been.

I got 80.83mm and not 84.99mm

and 21.29mm and not 23.14mm

I will be totally lost where to calibrate this printer and could use some help please.

The “actual size” did not work with my printer and to fix the problem, was to change it from actual size to percentage and increase it to 105 percent

There are some things/settings to consider before printing on paper. In other words : As far as I understand it, when MCL publishes the PDF documents there a 2 different paper sizes that he uses. 1. the LEGAL paper size (8.5″ x 13″) intended to be used for printing the component layout maps and maybe schematics as well,  and  2. the LETTER size (8.5″ x 11″) this is specifically used for printing out the actual PCB layout “True to Life” scale 1:1  (for the toner transfer) and “usually” set for “Landscape” and Actual Size (not fit to paper nor percentage !). Now, if you somehow mixed up or not set the above sizes (at all) in software or printers menu (if it has a menu on the front panel) that could explain the printout size difference. In my opinion, it is unlikely that is anything wrong with the printer itself.

@ovi4 I have printed the PDF for transfer on the inkjet the size needed was good, but when I printed with the laser it was printed small with all the same setting. After looking how to correct my problem, was to enlarge it by 5 percent to get what was needed when I check with my caliper was right on.
I even used more than two calipers to make sure if it was my calipers were off.

This sure would be a problem if I did not enlarge the printing, and wonder if other may have had this problem.

Hmm….that is really strange considering that you’ve said before that the “printer is actually brand new”. I’m thinking, if there is a chance that in software could be somewhere another sort of….”utility” application that is within the main software package (that came with the printer) that allows you to somehow calibrate/re-calibrate the software .                             EDIT :  while writing my current post (to you) I decided to quickly do a search to see, if other people have encountered your problem and….to my surprise, they have. I’ve found an old post on “reedit” that is actually a “renewed” post of an even older (apparently) already solved problem by someone else. Reading some posts the general conclusion is that when relying on the windows operating system software to handle the printing for you (I’m assuming that is to do with the printers driver that windows automatically assigns to the printer to make it work under Windows OS) the printing outcome will always be with this “erroneous” scale problem but…the minute you install the Brothers original software that they want you to use and do the printing within it, then the problem is fixed. Now, here is a link to the above thread and perhaps you can follow “The rabbit hole”  yourself a little deeper (if you wish) and try/adapt the solution to your printer and…Fingers Crossed..it might work. I hope it helps and I.m actually curious if it does. Good luck !                                                            https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/comments/mxyrh0/solved_brother_printer_doesnt_print_exact_actual/

Thank you, I did see the driver and just did the full install and they used the window 10 driver…Hum, something to look at.
