Small smd parts and hot 🔥 air stations are a bad combination. I loose less with the tweezers iron

Hi all,

This is my first post here.

I do work a lot with imperial 0201. The very low signals RF PCB’s prototypes I work with don’t handle to well hot-hair soldering (PCB capacitance changes) so soldering iron way.

My advice is: Don’t move. Don’t breathe. Or else the some king of parts collecting goblin will come to visit you and they’re gone forever. I swear, I’ve seen one once, it was just a fraction of a second. 🤥 🤣

@radtekman I loss some LED’s, I wonder if a magnet would work.

But afraid what else I may find.

I feel better hearing other have had the same problem.

@tomswork I agree, hot air can make them fly.

Hi Everyone,

I read your form and wanted to share a technique I’ve been using for years with great success. I’ve found that Play-Doh, particularly the kind you can find at dollar stores, is an excellent tool for holding SMD parts in place.

The malleability of Play-Doh allows it to conform to the shape you need for SMD parts, providing a secure hold without causing any damage. This has proven to be incredibly useful when conducting tests with VOM or other test equipment, as it prevents the parts from moving or being lost.

Since I started using Play-Doh for this purpose, I haven’t lost a single SMD part. It’s a simple, cost-effective solution that I highly recommend.

@rich Thank you Rick and great idea.

I better not ask my wife to pickup some Play-Doh, as she think I am losing it the way it is.
