I’d like to start experimenting with SMD and I’d love to buy capacitor and resistor Sample Packs. Seems there are 95 choices of each sample pack.
Can anyone recommend a couple of very general everyday sample packs without having to buy another version of Encyclopaedia Britannica. I don’t mind buying 2 of 3 but not 20 of each

Hi Darren,
I think you’ll find that they are only available as 10’s, 20’s or 40’s for samples. They are supplied on a short length of tape. Try this for resistors to start with.

If you have not soldered any SMD, I would say buy a practice kits like from Amazon.
I also got some sample from Amazon also.
The ones I have check seem to be okay, but who knows how long they would last.
Doing MCL project, I have just got what I needed from Digikey and Mouser.

@larry_n7luf Yeah, I second this. I never touched SMD at all until a couple of years ago and I got some practice kits to try my hand with first to determine my threshold of pain haha. (ie, when is it time to set the iron aside and get out the paste + heat gun.)
I also recommend checking alibaba/banggood for SMD DIY practice kits if you have the time to wait for shipping–I got a whole bunch of them dirt-cheap (like literally a couple of bucks a kit) to practice with.
Thanks guys, soldering isn’t the problem.Since I’ve made a couple of Mr Carlson’s projects, I’ve decided the boards I make now are mostly going to be SMD. I’d just like some recommendations on which are the most common “Sample Books” to purchase, as there are so many to choose from for resistors and capacitors.
I’d really like to purchase some Sample Packs that I’m going to use, is there a real sample pack that has just “common” components
Cheers Darren.
@deckedoutdaz Darren, I have bought 3 or 4 “Sample Books” and seem okay, but I check each part as I go. The value may not be right on, but you get what you pay for.
I guess I can not say yea or nay
