first off when i try to download a schematic form the Mr. Carlson patron page i get a message saying to pm Mr. C but i am unsure how to do that ( man i thought i know how to internet worked lol ) . I’m also struggling with making up pcb for the projects. I’m certain i could do it if i have all the supplies and chemicals but this is a bit out of the scope of my interest . i understand Paul doesn’t make kits . thats fine part of the fun is sourcing parts . im at a bit of a loss as what to do here. i wonder if any one lives near me that could maybe help me out . im in California near Modesto if that helps . alwas good to meat other tinkers .
Hi Chris. To PM Paul for the .pdf info etc of a project go to the Mr Carlson’s Lab home page
https://www.patreon.com/c/MrCarlsonsLab/posts?vanity=MrCarlsonsLab
& on the upper right of the page are three clickable links “Gift membership” an envelope icon & the three dots icon, Click the middle envelope icon. Remember to supply the number of the video number that offers the information and your own personal email address. (Note: It pays to only put that info into the PM to streamline the process i.e. do not ask questions etc… do a separate PM to Paul should you have the correct Patreon level to enable you to seek assistance from him.
As to making your own PCBs at home with the Toner Method. I was always dubious but i have to say after watching the videos & doing a few mods to a basic thermal laminator i bought on special at a stationery outlet the process is not that difficult. I did invest in a new Laser printer as the one i have had for decades was in no way any good (i guess tech sure moves on).
When you go to do the etching part of the job have plenty of space and keep it tidy as you work. I made sure i bought fresh good quality chemicals … the Ferric Chloride & tin plating solution. Rectangular glass containers with air tight sealing lids. Always buy the FR4 board from reputable electronics component suppliers as some of the copper clad board i found on ebay was just junk.
Apologies, California is a bit far away from me here in New Zealand to come help you out but if i were closer, no problem. I’m into my 1st year retired and seem to have so many moments of spare time compared to when i was employed.
I’m sure you will soon be building some Carlson projects…
@peteb2 thanks I will check the website and find the correct video. I do think it’s quite a doable proget to do the pcb at home for me it is a bit of a burden on space and expense. I need a new printer a laminator several chemicals etc. I suspect I’d be well over a hundred bucks before I ever solder anything. I really don’t have room for all this and I would rather just be able to work on building the project.
@peteb2 ok i think i have sent my first request i suppose ill know wen i arrives
@chris-anderson yes, the process will depend on where you are in the cycle of having paid your monthly Patreon Fee. I suggest just keep checking your email. Note it will arrive reasonably quickly & have attachments as pdf so make sure you save them into a Folder & name it so you will remember it easily. You can also go back to where you PM’d Paul & all your communications will be there including if your request has been sent. Cheers!
