So…I probably have 20 or so SMPS’ plugged into various outlets around the house. Intermittently, our Panasonic cordless phone system is unusable due to incredibly loud noise/buzzing on the line. Your last video about noise on the ‘mains’ gave me an aha moment.
So assuming a SMPS in the house is causing the problem, would I need to isolate a particular noise frequency (via an oscilloscope) to select the right capacitor to fix the problem, or is there a rule of thumb value? If so, what value and part number would you suggest I use/start with? Of course I may have multiple noisy SMPS’.
Many thanks in advance,
Dale
In my experience, the LED lights and dimmers cause the most interference. You can find out what item is causing the most noise by individually unplugging one component at a time. I fixed my major offender (dimmer) by replacing it with a low-noise dimmer. These dimmers are more expensive and work by switching when the ac power is at the zero point in its 60Hz cycle
@dmnwilcox Welcome, as frogman said go through and disconnect/turn off one thing at a time to figure out the worst offenders. At that point you can experiment with caps as in the video. For the most part you can probably use one value for most items as value is not exact. Additionally, any cap would be better than no cap. I think I have 2 or 3 values of caps that were in the video and they cover pretty much anything.

Gentlemen,
Thank you both.
I think I will start by flipping breakers to see if that helps isolate the noise. Then I can further go after plug in P removed link
@RadTekMan : Which two values worked for you, and do you have any P/N’s?
Thanks again in advance!
@dmnwilcox Well the common values used in tube gear I mess with are 0.01/0.0047/0.001. I also had to pick up a different brand for 0.1 for another project. Go to mouser or your supplier of choice, search VY2. Vishay VY2 series is what Mr. C uses, just pick out the value(s) and order them up. As cheap as they are, I always get extras of everything to keep on hand, also allows you to pick one that works best for your situation.
