I just printed my very first PCB for the “The Ultra Probe Demodulator – Amplifier”
I have question for this board, I had only one pad lift of after soaking in the water. Only half of the pad was left and what is the way to fix it before I etch this board.
Also this calls for double sided board for a ground plain, what do I do to protect the back of the board?
I hope this okay to ask here in the forum.
I am excited after all these years for my first board and it was truly easy and now to do more.

Hi Larry,
For fixing half a pad, I’d try using a good quality permanent marker of appropriate fineness to fill in the bit that fell off.
I did discover a caveat with etching for permanent marker – you can’t use the sponge method to etch as it’ll take off the permanent marker too. Have to drop it in and agitate.
Unsure about the best way to cover the back of the board – whether it can be taped. You could also permanent marker the entire back, cleanup may take a while.
Keen to hear other suggestions.

Am checking out the ultraprobe video on Patreon from December 17th last year.
Paul mentions using standard packing tape to tape the ground side of the ultraprobe board, and using a a knife to cut the excess off. He says that with enough excess PCB around the project, a little bit of a leak under the tape won’t effect the board proper once cut down.

This is precisely what I do when etch any of my PCB’s that need full copper cladding left on one side and the tape method works fine!. Like MCL said Just oversize your PCB a little (when you first cut it) , and you’ll have it precisely cut to size after etching is complete. The secret here is to use a High Quality Tape that is truly “sticky” making sure that the surface is perfectly clean and dry, no dust and no greasy fingerprints on it before applying the tape. And make sure that there are no air bubbles left under the tape that could potentially migrate towards the PCB edges during the etching process. As for missing bits of trace correction, well…long time ago I use to use a fountain pen filled with a so called “CARMINE RED INK” that was known to have a thinker texture when dried than other usual ink colors uses with a fountain pen, therefore will take very well on etchant and also allowing you to restore a trace very precisely regardless of it’s size or shape. I’ve learned this from some very old and experienced “tek” people. Back then, they were actually do the whole PCB art work design by hand like that ! since they didn’t have access to any PCB software or a laser printers etc. And by the way back then a diluted “Hydro-Chloric acid” solution was far more accessible and often used as etchant than todays “ferric chloride”. Hydro-Chloric Acid by nature is known to be very toxic and much more aggressive than today’s chemicals and people naturally shifted towards much safer alternatives.
@w00t Thank you, I did remember him say some kind of tape, I could not remember the video where it was.
I wish the where a way to index the videos where to look for a subject one would be looking for.
I do use control +(F) to search the list of his videos, but it does not always find what I am looking for.

Cool, that’s a promising start Larry. 🤩 Those boxes are certainly nice to have and work with.
@ovi4 I believe I got a great price for those boxes.
Not sure if I can tell the seller name here or not.

I’m fairly sure It won’t matter since … after all is helping each other to get our projects done.
You can look at the comments on Patreon Video 182 to see where and the cost $17.80 each for the 1590D

Hi Larry. Are you talking about Mr Carlsons Videos (#182)?
I don’t see any of his videos numbered.
Whats the title of it please?
Cheers
Chris
@chris Hi, All Mr. Carlson’s Videos are numbered (100%) no exceptions there. But we are talking about the list of videos that MCL kindly provides to us the Patreon members only!, not the ones on YouTube (to avoid confusion). If you are new (on Patreon) as a contributing member, on the main page, look below the video thumbnail (below any video you first see). There is a brief description of what the video is about, but also provided are: 2 links (highlighted in blue). 1 will lead you to this website here and the second, leads you to a page that we call: ” The list of Videos “. So you’ll obviously see a list of videos there, each video is named and numbered in a numerical order as from 1 to 186 (so far). So, if someone refers to video numbers (only), then that’s the list you need to look for.

Just as @ovi4 said, if you see video numbers will be for Patreon members, and sorry for any confusion.
There is so much more can be found being a Patreon member for all the ends and out of his projects.

Working on my next step, and almost time for a little paint.
The picture is upside down.
