Dumont cathode-ray oscillograph type 241 – Good buy?

I just picked up my first “Oscilloscope” and as it happens, my first project.
Did I bite off more than I can chew?

The previous owner said that it powered on and that the “green dot” appeared on the screen.

It appears to have all the original caps that I assume will need to be replaced.

Other than being very dirty it seems to be in good condition for being 70ish years old.

Can anyone offer any advice on this boat anchor?

Thanks!

oh yeah, I paid 40.00 🤓

I remember we had some Dumont/Fairchild scopes kicking about the back of the store room in Lower Technical School (Netherlands, mid 1980’s). They got used for anything they wouldn’t let us use the newer Tektronix on but honestly? They were very nice scopes to use and certainly felt very “Yank” in quality, meaning seriously overbuild and just “nice”. Really not unlike the Tektronix from that age and later of course, before “everything turned to plastic” (wow, that does make me feel old, putting it like that haha) But I really couldn’t tell you anything about which models they were, 2 different types if I remember right, or what exact age they were, 1950’s would be my guess. Now, as for how to revive your “boat anchor” I would agree that re-capping is a definite yes, but perhaps, prior to doing anything, getting some documentation on whatever model you picked up would be the best start possible. Just remember Dumont was far from a bunch of “amateurs” and well, boat anchor or not, you own a pretty nice piece of history. I’m quite sure you would very much enjoy having it in working order and it surely would be worth the effort. So, good luck!

Great start to the addiction! My first project and dive into tubes was a Heathkit IO-12 scope. Believe it or not, I never actually finished it or even turned it on to this day (6 years ago). Projects started to pile up and life got in the way so it never got done. Need to get it back on the bench and knock out the rest, it is very overdue at this point haha. I would say take your time and do sections at a time, but not as much time as I have taken.

Radios + Tubes + Scopes + Cars= Nothing better!

It’s definitely a great distraction from life!
I almost have it fully capped, exception being 7 harder to source without breaking the bank caps.
4uF 600v and .5 1500v. (If anyone knows a guy 😎)

It works, but only through the Y deflection plate connection. Thankfully it has 1.6v signal generator so I’m not working mostly blind.

Good times!
