All,  I am new to the Forum, but have been following Mr. Carlson’s You Tube channel for some time.  My career never allowed time to pursue a long standing interest in vintage radio restoration, however, being recently retired, I now have time to invest in my dream.  I’ve availed myself of Video 213, however, I cannot find any similar list of capacitors, other than seeing in videos that Mr. Carlson has confidence in the Illinois brand.  Can anyone point me to a list of capacitors that Mr. Carlson recommends?  Also, if any of you have any sage wisdom for a newbie, I’d love to hear it.

Hi, if my memory serves look at video nr: 52 where he discuss another bunch of reliable components. However as a general rule of thumb you can’t go wrong if you stick with the proper brand name capacitor manufacturers and make sure you buy from a well known component suppliers. Otherwise you could end up with some ”really good looking, nice” fake caps !.  I do remember that MCL said (at some point) that even he was fouled into buying some fake ones that looked so convincing and only after some tests he then realised were fakes. So, be careful.  I believe  most of us purchased some fakes (at some point) obviously not realising it until later.  On another note ICs  and transistors can be fake too. I myself have purchased fake ICs many times in the past but only by comparing the functional behaviour with a known good (authentic) component I then realised they were indeed fakes Fake components always function ”somewhat” but are well out of spec !

Ovi, I applaud you for trying to remember the videos, no way I can there is just so many. I too often stray from the exact list of parts but as Ovi said, name brand parts from a good source is pretty fool proof. There are 2 released verified parts lists on Patreon that I can remember with mentions in almost every video.

Radios + Tubes + Scopes + Cars= Nothing better!
