Hi all,
I have a 1963 JD 1010 tractor that still uses the original generator / voltage regulator system. It has been converted to negative ground but otherwise is configured as she left the plant. My question is: does anyone have experience with the design of a solid state VR to replace the double relay version currently used? I have not found much luck via the googles and I figure this forum will be my best shot at finding someone with that experience or knowledge of an existing product.
Thanks!
William
Don’t have any experience with this, but you might want to check out another youtube channel….
https://www.youtube.com/@jcondon1 does a ton of generator repairs and might be able to answer your question.
Hope this helps.
I would look for an alternator with a build in VR.
I am not sure what to be build that would carry the current.
I am sure someone may know how make a current the would control the field of the generator, but I could see something could be built.
I guess all you have to control the voltage output with the voltage supplied to the field winding to the generator.
There maybe something out there that can do it, but generator have brushes that fail.

The 1993 ford pickup trucks alternator and wire harness would be easy to use everything is in one harness the only wires coming out are just the battery and a dash light wire the harness is 2 ft long go’s straight to the battery
@jazzzer I am not sure of your question here, but I would google for a wiring diagram of 1993 ford pickup trucks alternator and wire harness.

Hi William, I just saw your post and it intrigued me since I built a solid state regulator for my walnut harvester. Wish I could say I designed it but I just found the plans from searching the internet. Mine has an alternator with an external voltage regulator kind of like an older Ford setup like Larry and Jazzzer mentioned. In fact I was able to gut the original regulator and put my circuit inside of it so it looks all original and works great. However in your post you mention it being a generator and when I went back to find the plans for you I saw on the website it specifically mentions not working on a generator…. so this may not work in your situation. From the schematic it looks like the gentleman who designed it is named Gary Lecomte. Check it out at the link below, I figured I would still share it because it worked out great for an alternator.

If you can fabricate a mounting bracket a one wire alternator would be an easy solution. https://imgpile.com/p/yp9k6EN
