My Take on a Dim Bulb Tester

Wanted to post this mainly because it was my first attempt at using Decals per Paul’s recent video.

Some features:

  • 4 bulbs can be used in combination for various current limits (40W, 60W, 2x100W)
  • Earth lift switch included (my isolation transformer has a through earth) – case is earthed for safety, output earth is switchable
  • Bypass switch
  • Output voltage meter – useful if current limiting but you want to make sure the correct voltage is there
  • Individual bulb switches are on the top out of view

Simple stuff I know, but I found a couple of vids on YouTube inspiring in designing this so thought I’d share my take – more than happy to listen to any critiques πŸ™‚

Very nice work, but may I ask a question.

Your equipment has an Amp Meter, but this is not shown on the Schematic, Why?

I do really like it though. I myself only have 1 lamp socket and I swap the lamp depending on the load I’m testing.

@brian-wood Sure – and thanks for your kind words.

The dim bulb tester part is the beige thing on top, the item below is a Heathkit IP-5220 isolation transformer, I get the variable voltage and Isolation from that, then run it through the dim bulb for current limiting.
