Ultra Probe detc vs audio switch

Concerning the Ultra Probe:  I am a little slow but could someone tell me when to use the detc vs the audio position on the det/audio switch?  I am not sure exactly what the detector part does vs the audio part.  Thank you in advance.

As an extension to the above question could someone explain the following:  The signal before an AM detector will be a modulated signal.  It seems like if we try listening for an audio signal, we will not be able to hear any actual signal as the modulated sound is inside the carrier wave.  How does the device hear the actual audio before the detector part of the AM radio, especially before and after the IF stages?

@fdx12345 Hi, to understand the above better you’ll obviously need to study a bit more about how a radio works but to cut the long story short the ultraprobe has a detector section as well as an audio section and you can activate (via a switch) one or the other. So, when the device is in audio mode, the probe will only sniff for audio signals (within the human audible range) simply because the detection section is deactivated. Alternatively, while your probe is in the RF/Detection mode, the received signal (by the probe head) will pass thru the detection section/circuitry of the base unit therefore an audible broadcasted signal will be heard (of course minus the carrier frequency). In short, what the detection section does is filters out/recovers  the modulated/carrier signal and gives you an audible signal only.      I hope it helps.
